Jay took over finance at 24, then watched six fractional CFOs come and go. The story behind Prosper CFO.
Transcript
Jay Dotson: I took over a finance function at 24 years old, which actually isn't a badge of honor. It should scare you, because of how much I did not know.
Jay Dotson: I was two months into that job, so not only was I green in my career, I was green at that company. I had no clue what I was doing. But the CFO and the staff accountant left two months into my role there, and suddenly I was the only person in finance within that organization.
Jay Dotson: I had no clue what I was doing, and thankfully the owner looked to me and said, "Jay, let's see what you got." I was too naive to know what I was getting into, and I was ambitious, so I said, "Heck yes, let's make it happen." He promised to surround me with the talent I needed to be successful in that organization.
Jay Dotson: But we went through years, six fractional CFO hires and four accounting transitions, ultimately spending hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to fill the financial leadership gap we were experiencing. And we were disappointed in what we found in the market.
Jay Dotson: I would go on to become a finance leader at that organization, then spend some time at a $100 million franchisor as part of their senior finance team, and then lead the company I lead today, Prosper CFO. We're one of the fastest-growing companies in the US, and we've helped over 100 business owners solve some of their toughest finance and accounting challenges.
